Mashed beans with chili and roasted pepper

Original recipe

Mashed beans with chili and roasted pepper is one of those recipes I can always make, because they taste so good.

Gnječeni pasulj sa čilijem i pečenom paprikom

5 min PREPARATION
90 min COOKING
Easy PREPARE
4 PORTIONS

components

  • 250 gr white beans
  • 1 onion
  • 2 clove garlic
  • 1 dl olive oil
  • 4-5 roasted peppers
  • some hot pepper (fresh one can do to)
  • coriander
  • chive
  • parsley to your liking

Instruction

  1. Wash and put beans in water the night before, leaving it there until you start preparing the dish.
  2. Chop onion and garlic and stew it for about 5 minutes on 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  3. Add beans and stew for 7 more minutes.
  4. Pour water and cook it all together until the water evaporates. It takes about an hour and a half, depending on the amount of water you poured in the dish.
  5. When the water boils, put the content from the dish into Versa electric blender, add all of the seasons and hot pepper, if you don’t like tasting them in the dish, and mix it all well.
  6. Don’t mix roasted pepper because it tastes better when you only chop it and mix it with the mashed beans.
  7. Put the mashed beans with chili and roasted pepper into the dishes that can go to the oven and roast it for a couple of minutes.
  8. Serve it while warm.

Kosovar style.

I had mashed beans with chili and roasted pepper for the first time at my mom’s a couple of years ago. She taught me all I needed to know on how to prepare mashed beans.

She got the original recipe from her very close friend (Svetlana) who, unfortunately, left us early. She was a very energetic, lively woman who had a sharp tongue when necessary. Even today, I simply cannot believe she is not with us anymore, and that her health so notoriously gave up on her.

For me, this is an authentic Serbian recipe from Kosovo, mashed beans with chili and roasted peppers.

In a memory of Svetlana, I am going to share this wonderful dish with you.

Don’t have second thoughts about making it for a moment… I am sure you will regret it unless you try it.

Mashed beans with chili and roasted pepper

Many will identify this dish as a famous papula. However, this is something completely different, and MUCH, MUCH BETTER, and you can check the old recipe for papula here.

I didn’t take photos of the process of making this mashed beans, because it is really simple to make it.

I washed beans and put it in water the night before.

What you will need to prepare this dish is an electric blender. I have the Versa one, and I can strongly recommend it. I am going to write about it in more details in some of the next posts, to see what else you can use it for.

Versa Blender

The only thing I did differently from the original recipe was not to use the white beans (tetovac- a kind of white beans), because I had none, but I prepared it with the brown beans. That is why it appears darker at the start.

I must admit that the combination of colors is better with the white beans.

Another thing I did differently, and that wasn’t in the original recipe… was that I put it in the oven to cook. You can to it as well, but you don’t have to.

All in all, this is a great recipe. It is a pity not to try it. A real vegetarian Serbian dish. You can use it for the following feast days.

Let me know how you liked it… you can also send me some photos, because the presentation matters as well 🙂
