Pretty spicy, refreshed with some new combinations of flavors and aromas from different meridians.<\/p>\n<p>There&rsquo;s one interesting little town in France, that is worth paying a visit, if you&rsquo;re already in Geneva, or in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>You probably wonder what has a French town to do with Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Ferney Voltaire is a town right on the Swiss border and some ten-minute drive from Geneva, i.e. Versoix. If you already happen to be in Geneva, I recommend paying a visit to Ferney Voltaire and enjoying what France is renowned for worldwide, and that is food and drinks.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ferney- Voltaire<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The town is first mentioned back in the 14<sup>th<\/sup> century, and what it is famous for is a big marked that is open on Saturdays. What shouldn&rsquo;t be neglected either, is a great international community that has developed here because of the existence of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_Office_at_Geneva\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">UN headquarters in Geneva<\/a><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>A huge number of people <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_Office_at_Geneva\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">working in the UN offices <\/a><\/span><\/span>lives in Ferney, because life there is significantly cheaper than the one in Geneva. The town got its other part of name after a French philosopher and poet Voltaire, who, after being banished, settled in Ferney.<\/p>\n<p>In the central town square, which is the central part of the market on Saturdays, there&rsquo;s his monument today. Nearby the city, Voltaire built the castle, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chateau-ferney-voltaire.fr\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">Chateau de Voltaire<\/a><\/span><\/span>, where artists from all over the world gather nowadays. At the moment when I was there, unfortunately, the entrance to the garden was closed for restoration, i.e. works. As you can see, there&rsquo;s a point in organizing a visit to Ferney Voltaire when traveling to France after all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/savourytrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Pesnik-i-filozof-Voltaire-e1474311394965.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4598 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/savourytrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Pesnik-i-filozof-Voltaire-e1474311394965.jpg\" alt=\"poet and philosopher Voltaire\" width=\"1134\" height=\"1161\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How did we end up in Ferney?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In order to experience the spirit of a country best, and fit into the everyday life of the region I visited in a short period of time, I always go to a local market first. It is mostly so because I love wandering and meander around the market, and thus I get new ideas that can be mixed in the pot. First of all, you can see everything you need there, and also, what the locals would naturally try to hide from you, when they want to introduce you to their home town. On the other hand, as most of the people working in the UN do, we also made plans, so that the trip to France and Switzerland was as economical as possible. A well-known fact is that the food in France is cheaper than in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Where can you stay in Ferney?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Unless you&rsquo;re just a wandering traveler who just wants to visit the market, but you also need to spend the night and enjoy in the wonders of France some more, and Geneva not being far away, too, there&rsquo;s a couple of hotels offered.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/fr\/citadines-aparthotel-ferney-voltaire.en-gb.html?aid=1176454;sid=9f92acbb756d196675b1df2978eb769c;all_sr_blocks=21856905_80023585_0_2_0;checkin=2016-09-24;checkout=2016-09-25;dest_id=-1426683;dest_type=city;dist=0;group_adults=2;highlighted_blocks=21856905_80023585_0_2_0;no_rooms=1;room1=A%2CA;sb_price_type=total;srfid=b08a182a203980dd6538d14188295e2812ef56b2X1;type=total;ucfs=1&amp;\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">Citadines Gen&egrave;ve Ferney Voltaire<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/fr\/residence-la-reserve-geneve-ferney-voltaire.en-gb.html?aid=1176454;sid=9f92acbb756d196675b1df2978eb769c;checkin=2016-09-24;checkout=2016-09-25;dest_id=-1426683;dest_type=city;dist=0;group_adults=2;room1=A%2CA;sb_price_type=total;soh=1;soldout=0%2C0;srfid=200266226002eb487fea63715aa6ed3a9f14aae8X1;type=total;ucfs=1&amp;\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">R&eacute;sidence la R&eacute;serve Gen&egrave;ve Ferney Voltaire<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After all, the stay in some of the Ferney hotels is a significantly cheaper solution, than staying in the hotels in Geneva.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ferney Voltaire market and the French cuisine<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since the market shows how the day would be, as for cuisine, I think it&rsquo;s dead heat between the French and the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Italian<\/span>, whose cuisine is better and more delicious. Principally, it depends on your taste, and so did this trip to France.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional French food is based on simple combinations of flavor, improved by adding some natural aromas of spices they use.<\/p>\n<p>Just like the Italians, the French have their diet rituals, lunch that usually consists of three or four dishes: appetizers, main dish, cheese, and dessert.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cheeses <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Cheese is usually served at the end of the main dish, but before the dessert<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/frenchcrazy.com\/2011\/09\/popular-french-cheeses.html\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">T<span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">he most famous French cheese<\/span>s<\/a><\/span> are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cheese.com\/chevre\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">Chevre<\/a><\/span>&ndash; traditional <strong>goat cheese<\/strong>. It can be soft, semi-soft or hard. It is easily combined with wines: <strong>Sauvignon, Blanc, Beaujolais<\/strong>. Any white wine that is young and chilled will do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roquefort<\/strong>&ndash; believe it or not, this is the real <strong>sheep cheese<\/strong>. I love eating it, and I love even more that I don&rsquo;t taste the sheep on it. There are real (green, whatever) fungi in it, and it has granular texture, i.e. it crumbles easily. The French Government allows only the cheese <strong>made in the Aveyeon region to be called Roquefort<\/strong>. Now you know what to pay attention to if you&rsquo;re looking for the original.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Camembert<\/strong>&ndash; soft cheese made of <strong>cow milk<\/strong>, originating from Normandy. It has strong aroma and taste. It is combined with red wine, and especially with <strong>Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir<\/strong>, but in case you prefer white wine, that it best goes with <strong>Chardoney<\/strong>, and for example <strong>Champagne<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brie<\/strong>&ndash; <strong>soft cow cheese<\/strong>, more often of pale yellow color, depending on its maturity. It bears strong resemblance to Camembert, but it&rsquo;s not the same, and the biggest difference is the equipment for the production which influences the maturing of cheese. Wine that this cheese is tasted with are the same as for Camembert, with the optional addition of <strong>Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Raclette<\/strong>&ndash; it is a real treat eating this cheese with dry white wine which is sour enough. If, however, you prefer red wine to the white one, that chill <strong>Pinot Noir<\/strong>. Raclette is <strong>cow cheese<\/strong>, and it is most frequently consumed as melted cheese.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>From the Ferney Voltaire market <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>More than three hundred seventy kinds of cheese are produces in France, and each of them brings with them something from the region where it is originally made.<\/p>\n<p>I would be very surprised, had I not seen all of those cheeses in one place at the market. There were spices from all over the world, because the purpose of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/naturalgourmetinstitute.com\/traditional-flavor-profiles-french-herbs-and-spices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">French cuisine is in different combinations of flavours.<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/savourytrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Stand-sa-zacinima-na-pijaci-Ferney-Voltaire.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4611 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/savourytrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Stand-sa-zacinima-na-pijaci-Ferney-Voltaire.jpg\" alt=\"Stall-with-spices-on-the-market-Ferney-Voltaire\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You&rsquo;ve probably heard of the famous <strong>Provence mixture<\/strong> consisting of <strong>marjoram<\/strong>,<strong> thyme<\/strong>, <strong>oregano<\/strong>, <strong>rosemary<\/strong>, and <strong>lavender<\/strong>, which is used for <strong>meat<\/strong>, but for <strong>fish and cooked dishes<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nutmeg<\/strong> is used for<strong> sauces<\/strong>, for example b&eacute;chamel and<strong> desserts<\/strong>. Combination of <strong>thyme, parsley, bay<\/strong> <strong>laurel, and pepper<\/strong> is used for <strong>soups<\/strong>. <strong>Saffron<\/strong> is used for the <strong>seafood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sea trip to France <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>What has left the greatest impression on me at this French market, was the part with fish and everything from the sea. I didn&rsquo;t even know some things were consumed, let alone how they can be prepared. They call those gardens <strong>potager<\/strong>. The vegetables that the French mostly use are chives, endive, nettle, and leek, but also zucchini, potato, carrot, blue eggplant, locally grown mushrooms, asparagus and artichoke which are frequently on the menu, which can be seen on the market stands.<\/p>\n<p>The most famous French salads are: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salade_ni%C3%A7oise\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">Nicoise<\/a>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mesclun\" rel=\"nofollow noopenner noreferrer\">Mesclun<\/a><\/span><\/span>, and even more famous mashed potato <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; Small manufactures, high quality and price.
