Trip to Gruyere
The Gruyere region is well known for its famous cheese Gruyere which can be mixed into every dish. In that region, there is also a small town with a similar name Gruyères.
Gruyères sits on the top of the hill in the heart of Switzerland. Where the green surfaces fascinate, and your attention is drawn to the endless pastures filled with cows.
That’s exactly the right place where you can justifiably say to yourself “the paradise starts from here”.
I didn’t expect such beauty of Gruyère when I planned to see how Gruyere cheese is made. I was very impressed with this region and the small town Gruyere. Everything looked so romantic as if I was in some Hollywood movie.
Top 10 attractions in Gruyère
The architecture of the 9th century surely provides a good cinematic journey into the past. The castle was also the residence of the counts of Gruyere. Now it is a place for exhibitions and a place where various events from musicals to workshops are organized.
Paintings, sculptures and ritual objects can be seen in this museum. All of those things come from Tibet, northern India, Burma, Kashmir, and they represent gods, deities, and objects for meditation.
Medieval streets in Gruyères
I was there in the late spring and everything looked like it was a movie set.
Church St. Thèodule
It is placed on the right side of the castle. What is very unusual is that it is built on a slope, with beautiful interior and cemetery that will not leave you indifferent.
Fountain on the central square
It was built in 1755, with drinking water in the city. The stone ball at the top of the fountain was used for all-day binding thieves.
The building from the 16th century which is now a gallery where artisans exhibit their work. There is a cross with Jesus’ crucifixion on the front wall of the building.
Moleson is a village in the area of Gruyere, which is only 7 kilometers away from the town of Gruyères. This is normally a winter center which provides the opportunity to ski. This time, I didn’t try skiing in Moleson, but I visited private production of cheese Gruyere on the slopes of the Alps.
What I learned was how to make cheese in the old traditional way. This is certainly the best recommendation for a new experience, and you can read about my perspective here
The House of Cheese (La Maison du Gruyere)
The highest industrial production of Gruyere cheese in the region.
Chocolate Factory Cailler (Nestle) in Broc
I think that is a sufficient headline 🙂 of what could be expected there.
A lot, a lot, a lot of … chocolate … yummy :).
If you do not remember what it’s like and with how many extra pounds I came back, then read this post and watch the video:
Gruyere cheese in various ways: in a sandwich, as a famous fondue, meringues made of cream, which consists of Gruyere cheese, served with coffee.
In the end, playing the traditional music 🙂
