Quick and easy poppy seed roll
Poppy seed roll my choice for today 🙂
Even though I really like poppy, and poppy seed strudel even more, I really don’t like making the crust. It’s always time engaging. That’s why I needed to find a way to overcome this task.
components
- CRUST:
- 4 eggs
- 100 gr of sugar
- CRUST:
- 4 eggs
- 100 gr of sugar
- 95 gr of flour
- 1/2 of a baking powder bag
- 1 vanilla pod
- POPPY SEED FILLING:
- 250 gr of poppy seeds
- 250 gr condensed sweet milk
- 60 ml of milk
- 60 gr of black or milk chocolate
- CHEESE FILLING:
- 250 gr of mascarpone cheese
- 250 ml of sweet cream (36% m.m)
- 1 spoon of orange aroma (Fleure d'orange)
Instruction
- Heat up the oven to 180°C. Then beat the eggs - yolk and whites separately with 50 gr of sugar each.
- Add vanilla to the yolk and gradually add mixed flour and baking powder.
- Mix at the slowest speed, and then add whisked egg whites. Mix it all by hand.
- Pour the mixture in a baking tray of 30x40 and bake at 180°C between 12-15 minutes. Adjust the baking time to your oven. The colour should be golden yellow.
- While the crust is being baked, mix milk, condensed milk and poppy seeds. Cook for about 10 minutes with constant stirring, and then add chocolate pieces off the heating body.
- Once the chocolate is completely melted, the filling is done. In the meantime, the crust will be baked, too. After taking it out of the oven, cover the crust for about 10 minutes with a wet cloth, so that we can roll it easily later.
- While the crust and filling are cooling down, we have time to make the cheese filling. Mix all the ingredients for the cheese filling. Add 1-2 spoons of powdered sugar to your taste (I didn't do this because I don't like it too sweet) and mix it with a mixer.
- The roll filling consists of spreading the chocolate and poppy seed filling first. Then, roll the crust with the help of the cloth. Once you make a roll, remove the crust and decorate the roll (coat it with cheese filling). You can sprinkle with poppy seeds, cocoa or grated chocolate on top.
- Enjoy!
At the end, I surprised myself by finding two simple ways.
The first is to make the poppy seed strudel in a shape of a roll, and the other is to make it with puff pastry from the store.
Poppy seed roll
Crust
For the crust, you need eggs, flour, baking powder and sugar. It’s always better to add some aroma or spice in the crust because then you will enhance the already existing flavours. I added vanilla, but you can add rose water, lemon zest, lime, orange, cocoa etc. This crust should be baked.
The other option for the crust is the store bought puff pastry. You should just spread it and bake it in the mold in which you will fill the poppy seed roll.
Poppy seed filling
The filling is so good that you can eat it like Nutella 🙂 With a big spoon. And this is what you have to do to see it for yourself:
Poppy seeds, condensed milk, (milk) chocolate for cooking… fantastic combination for poppy seed roll.
The filling should be cooked.
Cheese filling
Cheese filling is what makes the cake light. It has the same use as vanilla ice-cream for baklava. If you haven’t tried this combination yet, then you don’t know what you’re missing.
I used the best possible option for the cheese filling – mascarpone cheese, orange flavour and 35% fat sweet cream (Kravica).
This filling should just be whisked.
Filling the roll with poppy seeds and cheese
Once you make everything you need, you should fill the cake with all the ingredients. It doesn’t matter if it’s a roll, or a regular square shaped with puff pastry like mine. Poppy seed filling always goes on the crust, and when it cools down in the fridge, you should add mascarpone cheese cream.
Decorate with poppy seeds, cocoa or some berries on top.
And now a complete recipe.
